CIT STANDARDS is an evidence-informed training program designed to prepare law enforcement and first responders to safely and effectively de-escalate mental health-driven crises. CIT STANDARDS equips participants with practical tools they can immediately and easily recall in the field. The STANDARDS Framework is built on clear, easy-to-remember concepts that law enforcement and responders can easily recall under stress and in their everyday.

Why CIT STANDARDS?

CIT STANDARDS uses hands-on learning from the moment participants walk through the door. Participants will engage in role-playing, case studies, simulations, and a variety of high-energy activities that move beyond lectures and help them build practical skills they can feel confident about by the end of the training. These applied and tested skills are coupled with chunked learning and visual memory techniques to strengthen learning retention and memory recall, so responders not only learn but remember how to use their learning.

The program employs a multi-perspective approach that focuses on the responder, the individual in crisis, and others who may be involved or witnesses to crises. These 360 perspective-taking approaches integrate the voices of lived experience alongside community experts who help responders address common mental health concerns with realistic and relevant solutions.

CIT STANDARDS includes a standard certification process, participant and trainer scoring rubrics, and a robust trainer manual to ensure consistency, accountability, and measurably achievable outcomes.
